D-Day has arrived!

The time has arrived. My last day at work! I’ve been saying my goodbye’s all morning and they have been so… final. My leaving speech was short and sweet (better that way than offending anyone!) and now it’s just a case of tidying up a few things before I leave. I’ve lived and breathed this place for six years; I consider myself lucky that my job is also my hobby. All this time I’ve been here, it’s hardly ever felt like a job… it’s just something I like doing. Being paid for it is kind of a bonus really!

I’ll miss this.

I’ll update this blog from time to time when I start trekking through Europe and cycling across Australia… I’ve also started uploading the blog I wrote when I was in Africa over the Christmas hols… only the first two weeks or so at the moment (few pictures :( ), but I’ll upload the rest when I get a chance.

I really wanted to get this website finished off and navigable before I told everyone about it, but no such luck. It has been a chaotic month!

Thanks all!

The Plan

Well, well! After much badgering and persuading I have finally crumbled and decided to blog my forthcoming trip…

The plan is to march out of Trieste, Slovenia in June 2009 and follow the route of the Red Via Alpina as it winds its way through the Alps on its way to France. Tragically, Europe lacks $2-a-day Nepalese Sherpa’s, so I’ll have to carry all of my own gear (tent, backpack, stoveĀ and a great big lump of a camera) so I know it’s going to be tough. Rather than aim to complete the whole trek in a single hiking season – which might diminish the pleasure of horsing ones ass over a major mountain range somewhat – I’ve instead set my sights on reaching Switzerland.

After that, and assuming my knees still work, I will fly to Perth, Australia and cycle to Sydney where I will live. But more on that nearer the time!

Interspersed with travel updates might well be some of my Pillars of Programming Wisdom *

Tchau!
